Muroescrito Fall 2021
Santiago, Chile, 2021
Project of visual poetry
Muroescrito Fall 2021: "A Vemnutroana". In this sixth edition of our project of visual poetry in conjunction with the artist Martín La Roche, we invite you to collaborate on the iranian artist Arefeh Riahi.
On this occasion, the artist proposes a composition of words woven together. What seems to be par excellence a poetic gesture, that is to say, to emphasize that they represent the words, it becomes a conundrum. His work takes a structure in the abstract that on a first reading is easily readable – words that at first glance seem familiar but you are equally strange. The artist seeks to build a space in which the interpretation is to be recognized as a valid component within the communication, and in this way to highlight the indecidibilidad language.
A window and a wall, fold in a vemnutroana with the potential to see and pass through at the same time, and even more. This overlap, causing a delay in the understanding of the possible meanings. It is as if it were a clock broken; a text that points to a time late in search of new possibilities in the present time. The reader takes the time to access something thinkable but beyond the limits of the familiar syntax and with a certain degree of suspension in the ‘a’ time.
Arefeh Riahi (Tehran-1979) is an artist based in The Netherlands, whose research uses techniques performative, video, construction, drawing and writing as a means to address power relations, many times in response to the institutional conditions and sociological. The negotiations of motion, spatially, and socially imposed, the authority of history and the limitations of the translation are investigated by it through a poetic deployment, and diversion.
His work has been shown at venues including the Silk Road Gallery (Tehran, Iran), Cinema Museum (Tehran, Iran), Gallery Isabelle Van den Eynde (Dubai, UAE), in the 13th Festival photo of Delhi (India), Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY), 1646 Project Space (The Hague, NL), Gemak, The Hague, NL), REDCAT; Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (Los Angeles, CA), de Appel Art Center (Amsterdam, NL), Rozenstraat (Amsterdam) and Stroom Den Haag (The Hague, NL). Graduated from Azad University of Tehran (BA) and at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague (MA).
