Trivial
CATHERINE MATTHEY
13 de December al 18 de January de 2008 - 2009 Headquarters Santiago
Display Trivial the chilean artist Catalina Matthey, presents us with a hundred white fabrics of 25×25 cm c/u, which make up a large canvas 3×3 meters. Each fabric is embroidered with palotes vertical, repeating the sign next to each other and forming parallel rows so scriptural.
The downstroke, itself, has meaning temporary, which is enhanced by its repeated execution, it puts in evidence the course of time. Such a re-display of a sign that it is fully functional —and that therefore it has an aesthetic appearance independent of that office that performs— placing appearance above function questioned.
The white of the canvas in the white of the walls, which gives us –in the first instance - the impression that the room is empty,it reinforces the anesthesia produced by the repetition, as trivial and everyday of embroidery and speaks to us, in addition to the right to privacy from the craft.
The work becomes an example of what pulsional, the passage of time, the pleasure useless to pass the thread through the fabric, again and again.
